Tania, my kindergarten mate been working for a young talented pianist since last year. She ever worked for a career portal company for 5 years or so as a career development manager. Career development was always become one of our hot topic every time we chat. My last chat with her was about 2 years ago after her marriage and before she disappears for quiet long. Surprisingly she changed her career and become a talent manager since last 2 years.
What is a talent manager?
In brief Tania said “talent manager also known as a personal manager is a manager who guides the professional career of artists in the entertainment industry”
Is become a talent manager easier than any other types of manager?
This is her main consideration why she changed her career and decided to become a talent manager, because she thought being a talent manager would be much easier than any other type of manager, yet would have plenty of spare time to be spent with her husband and family. In fact it is not. A talent manager goes out often, particularly Tania for she manage a talented performer. She often goes out to manage her artist before the show, meeting with press and fans which mostly conducted outside of the office or even in other city, and tons of different outdoor activities.
The fun side, Tania (as a talent manager for a young musician) meets many famous artists, musicians and bands often. She never even dreamed about meeting with famous artists and musician who she watches on TV screen only before, have handshakes, even personal chats. I can see that she been enjoying her new job and career.
What are responsibilities and roles of a talent manager?
Main responsibility of the talent manager is to oversee the day-to-day business affairs of an artist; advise and counsel talent concerning professional matters, long-term plans and personal decisions which may affect their career. The roles and responsibilities of a talent manager vary slightly from industry to industry, as do the commissions to which the manager is entitled.
Tania (as a manager for a young talented pianist) does the following roles:
[-]. Determining decisions related to career moves, bookings, promotions, business deals, recording contracts.
[-]. Helping artists find an agent, or help them decide when to dump their current agent and identify who to select as a new agent.
[-]. Informally establish connections with producers and studios (but do not have the ability to negotiate contracts, a talent agents does).
Recently, along with growth of her artist, her roles as a talent manager have been much expanded and multiplied, including:
[-]. Developing a reputation for the musician(s) and building a fan base
[-]. Mastering and launching a demo CD.
[-]. Developing and releasing press kits.
[-]. Planning promotional activities, and booking shows.
[-]. Contacting and dealing with: recording studio, photographers, and promotions.
Does a talent manager also have to deal with customers?
“Yes Definitely!” Tania said. As her artist is performer typically, the artist performs at crowd often: wedding parties, wedding’s anniversary parties, in front of national and international conferences, in a café, restaurant and even free shows. Having deal with those parties are also main role of a talent manager. Fee/price dealing, appointment, scheduling, interviews, and signing the contract.
What typical days of a talent manager?
It is likely to be varying one to another talent manager; it depends on what artist/professional he/she manage. As for Tania, she manage a talented pianist, her typical day (“well, it could be day or night” she said) is when arranging and conducting show on a crowd venue, it is become worse when the audience is much more than the expectation, this means that the venue isn’t big enough for the crowd. That’s not an easy dealing.
How much a talent manager paid and how?
For good reason Tania did not let me know the exact amount. “In general, rate of pay is based on commissions of like 20 percent of the net, or 10 percent of the gross” Tania said. To me, it sounds like it will be depends on level of the development artist is at and experiences.
“I am planning to manage another artist which good friend of my recent artist” Tania stated. Wow…..! it sounds that a talent manager possibly manage more than one artist/professional in a time. “It is possible” Tania said.
Become a talent manager isn’t easier than an office manager, managers are always busy anywhere, any kinds. Are you interested to become a latent manager?.
